Welcome to a very potent day for the heart. Today is Tuesday, July 14, 2026, and the cosmos is inviting us into a deep, watery embrace. Early this morning, at 5:43 AM EDT, we experienced a New Moon in Cancer. In the language of Psychoastrology®, a New Moon represents a fresh start: a celestial "reset" button. When this reset happens in the sign of Cancer, the sign of the Moon’s own rulership, we are being called home to ourselves.
But there’s a twist in the cosmic weather today. Mercury is currently retrograde, also in the sign of Cancer. While New Moons usually urge us to plant seeds for the future, Mercury’s backward dance asks us to first look at the soil we’re planting in. Are there old emotional weeds that need pulling? Are there patterns from our family of origin or childhood that are still dictating how we feel safe today?
If you’ve been feeling a bit more sensitive, nostalgic, or perhaps even a little "moody" lately, take a deep breath. You aren't losing your edge; you’re softening into your truth.
The Heart of the Crab: Emotional Security and Nurturing
Cancer is the archetype of the Nurturer. It governs our literal homes, our families, and our internal sense of safety. In my work through Nolatherapy, I often see how our adult struggles with anxiety or relationship issues are deeply rooted in our early "nest."
This New Moon is asking you: What does emotional security feel like to you right now?
For many of us, we’ve spent years building "shells": external successes, busy schedules, or even emotional walls: to feel safe. But true security, the kind that Cancer teaches us, comes from the inside out. It’s the ability to sit with our feelings without judgment.

When we talk about mental health services, we aren't just talking about fixing what’s "broken." We are talking about creating a more nurturing environment for your own soul to inhabit. Use this New Moon to set intentions around self-care that feels authentic, not just performative. Maybe it’s setting a boundary with a family member, or maybe it’s finally giving yourself permission to rest without guilt.
Mercury Retrograde in Cancer: Healing the Core Wounds
Mercury retrograde often gets a bad rap for tech glitches and travel delays. However, in Psychoastrology®, it is a sacred time for "re-evaluation." Because Mercury is currently in Cancer, the focus is on our emotional communication and our history.
In my book, The Chiron Effect: Healing Our Core Wounds through Astrology, Empathy, and Self-Forgiveness, I explore how certain planetary placements highlight where we carry our deepest vulnerabilities. Mercury retrograde in Cancer is a prime time to revisit these "core wounds."
Are you repeating an old story that you aren't "enough" or that you have to earn love? Today’s energy invites you to rewrite that narrative. It’s a beautiful time for zoom therapy or deep journaling to unpack those long-held beliefs. By looking back (Retrograde) at our emotional roots (Cancer), we can choose which parts of our history we want to carry forward and which we are ready to compost into wisdom.
Venus Square Uranus: The Relationship Shake-up
Adding a bit of spice to the day, Venus is in a square aspect with Uranus. While the New Moon wants us to cuddle up and feel safe, Venus square Uranus wants to break free. This can manifest as a sudden urge for independence in your relationships or a desire to change up your routine.

If you find yourself feeling restless or experiencing a "u-turn" in a connection, don't panic. Uranus serves to wake us up. It asks: Where are you compromising your authentic self to keep the peace?
In couples therapy, we look at how to balance that need for closeness (Cancer) with the need for individual freedom (Uranus). Today is less about making a permanent "exit" and more about acknowledging where you need more breathing room.
Moving Toward the Light: The Shift to Leo
As we move into the evening, the Moon will transition from the watery depths of Cancer into the fiery, expressive sign of Leo. You might feel a noticeable shift in energy: from wanting to hide under the covers to wanting to be seen and heard.
With Jupiter also in Leo, there is a grand sense of possibility in the air. This is the universe’s way of saying that after the deep, emotional work of the day, there is joy waiting on the other side. Personal transformation isn't just about the "heavy" stuff; it's also about reclaiming your light, your creativity, and your playfulness.

A 3-Step Psychoastrology® Reflection Exercise
To help you navigate the potent energies of this July 14th reset, I’ve put together a simple, actionable exercise rooted in the principles of The Chiron Effect. Find a quiet space, grab a notebook, and let’s dive in.
Step 1: The "Retrograde" Review
Reflect on a recurring emotional pattern or "core wound" that has surfaced in the last two weeks. (Common ones include feeling misunderstood, neglected, or pressured to be perfect). Write it down. Now, ask yourself: How old does this feeling feel? Does it feel like it belongs to your 30-year-old self, or a 6-year-old self? Simply acknowledging the age of the wound helps create a compassionate distance.
Step 2: The New Moon Intentions
What is one way you can provide yourself with the nurturing you missed out on in the past? This is your "New Moon seed." Instead of waiting for someone else to provide security, how can you offer it to yourself today? (e.g., "I will speak to myself with the kindness I would offer a dear friend.")
Step 3: The Venus-Uranus "Authenticity Check"
Identify one area in your life where you feel "stuck" in a routine that no longer serves you. What is one small, radical change you can make today to honor your true self? It could be as simple as trying a new meditation technique or expressing a "taboo" feeling to a partner.

Final Thoughts
The journey of healing is rarely a straight line. It’s more like the phases of the moon: waxing, waning, and sometimes disappearing into the dark before emerging anew. This Cancer New Moon is your reminder that it is okay to be in the "dark" for a moment. It is okay to feel deeply.
By blending the insights of astrology with the grounded practices of psychotherapy, we can navigate these transitions with more grace and less fear. You have the power to be your own most compassionate caregiver.
If you’re looking for more personalized guidance on your path of transformation, I’m here to help. Whether it’s through individual therapy or exploring your own Psychoastrology® chart, we can work together to turn your core wounds into your greatest strengths.
Wishing you a restorative and insightful New Moon.
In healing and light,
Lisa Tahir, LCSW
