Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to be kind to a friend than it is to be kind to yourself? When a loved one makes a mistake, we’re usually the first ones there with a hug, a warm cup of tea, and a "Hey, it’s okay, you’re human." But when we stumble? The internal critic comes out swinging. We tell ourselves we should have known better, that we’re failing, or that we’re "broken."

At Nolatherapy, I see this every day. We are often our own harshest judges. But what if I told you that the key to moving past your deepest pain isn't found in "fixing" yourself or being "stronger," but in something much softer?

Healing happens through empathy. Specifically, it happens through the framework I call The Chiron Effect.

In my book, The Chiron Effect: Healing Our Core Wounds through Astrology, Empathy, and Self-Forgiveness, I dive deep into how we can use the "wounded healer" archetype to transform our lives. Today, I want to talk about why empathy is the bridge between where you are now and the peace you deserve.

The Myth of the Wounded Healer

The concept of the "Chiron Effect" comes from the Greek myth of Chiron, a centaur known as a great healer, teacher, and philosopher. Despite his ability to heal others, Chiron suffered from a physical wound that he could not cure for himself.

This story is a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Most of us carry "core wounds", psychological or emotional tender spots formed early in life. These wounds can manifest as feelings of inadequacy, a fear of abandonment, or a constant need for validation.

But here is the beautiful part: Chiron’s wound didn't make him weak. It made him the greatest healer of his time because he understood pain intimately. Your wounds don't disqualify you from a happy life; they actually give you the unique capacity to heal yourself and others through empathy.

What Is Psychoastrology®?

You might be wondering how astrology fits into psychotherapy. I coined the term Psychoastrology® to describe the intersection of psychology and astrology. While traditional therapy looks at your history and behavior, Psychoastrology® uses your natal chart, specifically the placement of the asteroid Chiron, to pinpoint where your core wounds live.

By identifying these areas, we can stop guessing why we feel "stuck" and start applying targeted empathy to those specific parts of our soul. Whether your wound is centered around your sense of worth, your communication, or your ability to feel safe in the world, understanding its origin allows you to meet it with compassion rather than frustration.

Breaking the "Orbit" of Pain

We all have patterns. Maybe you keep dating the same type of person who isn't good for you. Maybe you consistently self-sabotage just as you’re about to succeed at work. In the research for my book and through discussions on my podcast, All Things Therapy, I’ve found that these patterns are like an "orbit."

We get stuck in a repetitive emotional frequency. We loop through the same thoughts and reactions because our core wound is running the show from the basement of our subconscious.

Empathy is what breaks that orbit.

When you meet a painful memory or a "failure" with empathy, you change the frequency. You move from a state of defensiveness and victimhood into a state of empowerment. You start to see that your behavior was just a survival mechanism. Once you thank that part of yourself for trying to protect you, you can finally let it go.

Self-Empathy: The Foundation of Change

Empathy operates on two levels: internal and external. But here’s the kicker, you cannot truly give to others what you haven't given to yourself.

If you are judgmental and harsh toward your own flaws, you will inevitably project that judgment onto others, even if you don't mean to. On the flip side, the more you meet yourself with self-empathy and self-forgiveness, the more naturally you can offer that to your partner, your children, and your colleagues.

How to Practice Self-Empathy Today:

  1. Notice the Narrative: Pay attention to your "self-talk." Would you say those words to a five-year-old child? If the answer is no, it’s time to soften the tone.
  2. Validate the Feeling: Instead of saying "I shouldn't feel this way," try "It makes sense that I feel this way given what I've been through."
  3. Breathe into the Discomfort: When a core wound is triggered, don't run away. Sit with the feeling for two minutes. Acknowledge it. Give it space to exist without trying to "fix" it immediately.

Healing Through the "All Things Therapy" Lens

On my podcast, I’ve had the privilege of interviewing incredible thinkers, healers, and celebrities who have all shared their journeys of transformation. The common thread is always empathy. Whether we are discussing stress affecting the body or how to build resilient relationships, the solution always involves coming back to the heart.

Healing isn't a linear process. Some days you’ll feel like you’ve conquered the world, and other days you might feel like you’re right back where you started. That’s okay. The Chiron Effect teaches us that the goal isn't necessarily to "erase" the wound, but to learn how to live and lead from a place of integrated compassion.

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your patterns, please know that help is available. Whether it’s through Zoom therapy from the comfort of your home or by diving into the resources I’ve put together, you are not alone on this journey.

One of the most powerful things you can do for yourself right now is to educate your mind and heart. My book, The Chiron Effect, is a step-by-step guide to identifying your specific core wounds and applying the medicine of self-forgiveness.
