As the sun shifts into the sign of Cancer, we collectively move from the breezy, intellectual air of Gemini into the deep, intuitive waters of the Crab. Cancer season (roughly June 21 to July 22) is a period defined by the Moon, our celestial mother, which governs our internal world, our rhythms, and our deepest emotional needs. In the realm of Psychoastrology®, this isn’t just a change in the calendar; it is a sacred invitation to come home to yourself.
If you have been feeling more sensitive lately, or if memories from the past are surfacing with unexpected clarity, you are not alone. This season asks us to stop running and start feeling. It’s a time to honor the "I Feel" mantra and recognize that our sensitivity is not a weakness, it is a superpower for healing and transformation.
What is Psychoastrology®?
Psychoastrology® is a term I coined to describe the powerful intersection between traditional psychotherapy and the archetypal wisdom of astrology. While traditional therapy provides the tools to process trauma and change behavior, astrology offers a cosmic map of our soul’s blueprint. By looking at where the planets were at the moment of your birth, and where they are moving now, we can uncover the deeper "why" behind your patterns.
During Cancer season, we specifically look at the Moon’s placement in your chart. The Moon represents how you self-soothe, what makes you feel safe, and your relationship with the concept of "home." In my work, particularly in my book The Chiron Effect, I explore how we can bridge these spiritual insights with psychological principles to foster profound personal growth.
Tending to the Roots: The Inner Child
Cancer is the archetype of the nurturer, the caregiver, and the protector. But before we can effectively care for others, we must learn to care for the "youngest" parts of ourselves. In psychology, we call this Inner Child Work.
Our inner child is the repository of our earliest memories, joys, and wounds. When Cancer season highlights our need for security and belonging, it often triggers the parts of us that felt unsafe or overlooked in childhood. This is a fertile time to ask: What did my younger self need that they didn't get?

Healing the inner child isn't about wallowing in the past; it’s about becoming the compassionate parent you always needed. It’s about looking at those tender, unfinished memories and saying, "I see you, and you are safe now." This is the core of personal transformation, moving from a place of reactive wounding to a place of conscious, self-led healing.
The Practice of Self-Compassion
In a world that often prizes "hustle" and "grind," the soft energy of Cancer can feel counter-cultural. However, self-compassion is the foundation of mental health. During this season, I encourage you to adopt a "softening" practice.
Self-compassion means treating yourself with the same kindness you would offer a dear friend or a small child. When a strong emotion arises, whether it’s anxiety, sadness, or a sudden wave of nostalgia, instead of judging it, try to name it. “I am feeling a lot of heaviness right now, and that’s okay. My feelings make sense given what I’ve been through.”
Journaling Prompts for Cancer Season
One of the best ways to navigate these emotional tides is through reflective practice. Grab a journal, find a quiet corner, and sit with these questions:
- Defining Safety: What does "home within myself" feel like? What boundaries, routines, or people help me feel that sense of inner sanctuary?
- Unmet Needs: As a child, what did I need most (comfort, protection, to be heard)? How can I offer one of those things to myself today?
- The Crab’s Shell: Where in my life am I over-protecting myself (staying in my shell), and where do I need to build better boundaries to feel safe enough to come out?
- Emotional Nourishment: What activities feel like "soul food" to me? How can I schedule one of these activities this week without guilt?

Work/Life Balance and the "Crab's Shell"
The symbol for Cancer is the Crab, an animal that carries its home on its back and has a hard outer shell to protect its soft, vulnerable interior. This is a perfect metaphor for work/life balance and emotional boundaries.
Many of my clients struggle with "emotional leakage", taking the stresses of the workplace home or allowing the needs of others to completely override their own. This season reminds us that a shell is necessary. It isn't meant to keep everyone out; it’s meant to ensure that your inner world remains a sanctuary.
Practical Takeaways for Well-being:
- Create a Transition Ritual: When you finish your workday, do something physical to signal the shift. Change your clothes, take a five-minute walk, or wash your hands to "wash off" the day’s energy.
- Prioritize Rest: Cancer is ruled by the Moon, which governs sleep and cycles. If you are feeling depleted, honor that. Rest is not a reward for productivity; it is a biological and emotional necessity.
- Saying "No" as Nurturance: Sometimes, the most self-compassionate thing you can do is say "no" to an extra commitment so you can say "yes" to your own peace.
The Power of Virtual Support
The deep, reflective work of Cancer season: exploring your Psychoastrology®, healing your inner child, and dismantling old patterns: is often best done with a guide. I understand that the world is busy, and finding time for yourself can be a challenge.
This is why I offer virtual therapy and online sessions. Whether through Zoom, FaceTime, or phone, these sessions allow you to do this profound inner work from the comfort and safety of your own "home base." Online therapy bridges the gap, making mental health support accessible regardless of your schedule or location.
In our sessions, we can dive into your birth chart, address your current life challenges, and use integrative techniques like meditation and energy principles to help you find your footing amidst the emotional tides.

Embracing the Tide
Cancer season reminds us that like the moon, we go through phases. We are not meant to be "on" or "happy" all the time. There is a season for growth, and there is a season for turning inward to tend to our roots.
As we navigate these emotional waters, remember that your sensitivity is your compass. It tells you when you are out of alignment and when you are heading home. Be gentle with yourself. Offer yourself the nurturance you so freely give to others.
If you are ready to explore your own Psychoastrology® or begin the journey of inner child healing, I invite you to reach out. You can listen to more insights on the All Things Therapy podcast or schedule a session to begin your personalized transformation.
Let the tides carry you not away from yourself, but deeper into the heart of who you truly are.
